Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome or POTS, as it is commonly referred to, is not a very widely known condition. It affects more women than men, and it is not so common in children, but it is said to affect almost a third of the American population. Although it is not life-threatening, it does change life because it limits what you can and cannot do in life. It is a situation where your heart rate sometimes increases up to 30 beats per minute, higher than the expected rate. Sometimes the condition is accompanied by blood pressure but not all the time.

Common Symptoms and Signs of POTS

There are several symptoms of POTS, but this article will only mention a few of the most common ones. These are:

Brain Fog

Brain fog is a situation where the patient cannot think fast or concentrate. Most patients with this condition tend to forget a lot and have a problem focusing. As a result, they take a long time to find the right word to communicate, and they also have a cloudy mind.

Dizziness and Rapid Heart Beats

POTS patients have a problem with blood circulation when they stand because more blood concentrates on the lower part of the body. That triggers the heart to work harder to return more blood to the upper body causing the increase in heartbeat. As a result, the patient becomes dizzy and may fall.

Nausea and Abdominal Pains

Most POTS patients experience stomach complications accompanied by nausea and abdominal pain. Many problems in POTS patients are associated with a dysfunctional nerve that limits the blood flow to the upper part of the body when they stand. At the same time, the gastrointestinal symptoms in these patients are linked to the dysfunctional nerve supply to the stomach. That may also lead to constipation, stomach bloating, and diarrhea.

Other symptoms include fatigue, chest pain, headache, sleeping problems, and abnormal sweating. You may also experience fatigue, shortness of breath, and reddish legs when you stand. Since this condition affects most body parts, it is wise to consider a thermography test. It will point out any part of the body that may be having any issues for earlier treatment.
