How Do Your Breasts Change As You Age?

As you age, your breasts will most likely undergo some changes. According to the National Cancer Institute, as you age, most breast changes are non-cancerous and not a cause for concern. Here are some of the ways your breasts change as you age:

Sagging

Estrogen levels naturally decline as you age. After this, the connective tissue begins to break down, which can cause sagging. Women with larger breasts may be more prone to this, as higher breast mass is more subject to gravity than lower breast mass.

Size Change

Breasts often become smaller when you age. This is also one of the symptoms associated with the natural decline of estrogen, as the gland tissue shrinks. This makes the breasts less full and decrease in size. However, there is one exception to this sign. Weight gain can cause breast size to increase with aging, not decrease.

Appearance of Lumps

This may sound alarming, but most lumps due to aging are benign. They are most commonly non-cancerous cysts. However, if you do notice a change, be sure to bring it up with your doctor. While it will most likely be harmless, it's best to rule out breast cancer. Breast cancer risks also increase with aging.

Downward-Pointing Nipples

Once breasts begin to sag, the nipple can change directions as well. In this case, it may start to point downwards.

Warning Signs

Most breast changes when aging will not be warning signs. However, there are a few symptoms that are not associated with the normal aging process that you want to look out for, including:

  • puckering
  • redness
  • itching
  • nipple discharge
  • swelling

If you notice these signs or are otherwise concerned, it's best to call your doctor.
